1 CONC and no further record in Pittsylvania City, VA.  Tabitha Keesee was not 
1 CONC mentioned in the will of her father (Arthur Keesee), which has created 
1 CONC confusion with her mother over her marriage to Robert Martin.

1 CONC National Society.  In her will, Mrs. Keesee disposed of an estate valued 
1 CONC at $834,000.  She bequeathed to nieces and nephews incomes for life from 
1 CONC rental property, and the home on Church Street, Martinsville, was left to 
1 CONC the First Baptist Church for use as a parsonage at the death of a sister, 
1 CONC Mrs. Mattie S. Marshall, and a niece, Miss Alice Simmons, who were given 
1 CONC a life estate in the home.  The Virginia Baptist Orphanage at Salem was 
1 CONC bequeathed $70,000 with which to construct a Keesee Memorial Recreation 
1 CONC Building; and the bulk of the estate $834,000 was eventually to pass into 
1 CONC the Charles B. Keesee Educational Fund.  Mr. and Mrs. Keesee left no 
1 CONC children.  Residence "Chaskeeookee", Hunt Street, Martinsville, VA.

1 CONC Charles is the least documented of all of Richard and Ann Keesee's 
1 CONC children.  His name is on the 1782 County Tax List in Pittsylvania Co., 
1 CONC Va. indicating he was married with 6 children.  One the 1785 Tax List he 
1 CONC is recorded as having 8 children, one dwelling and 5 other buildings 
1 CONC (Children were not identified by name until 1840 census).  In 1793, 
1 CONC Charles and his wife, Hannah, sold 220 acres to Nathan Glenn for 125 
1 CONC pounds.  There were other transactions with his brothers George and John 
1 CONC Keesee, too numerous to present here.  Although he was listed as an 
1 CONC executor in his father's will, when it was probated in 1794 he did not do 
1 CONC so and, I believe, had already left the county.  He was not listed on the 
1 CONC 1790 Virginia Census, and on September 16, 1800, he, along with sons 
1 CONC Elias and Richard and nephew, Avery Keesee, received land grants in 
1 CONC Russel County, Virginia on the Tennessee border.  Elias and Richard 
1 CONC apparently settled for a time in Tennessee, but nephew, Avery returned to 
1 CONC Pittsylvania County.  On Sept 5, 1815, Avery and Jenny Keesee and Charles 
1 CONC and Mary Keesee and the Estate of Elias Keesee had their Russel County 
1 CONC land sold at Public Tax Sale by the Sheriff.  Charles Keesee and his 
1 CONC children soon left Tennessee and moved on into Lawrence, and Pulaski 
1 CONC Counties in Kentucky, and then into Taney Co., Missouri.  Dr. Vincent

1 CONC somewhere in Missouri, then took a "test" and became a schoolteacher.  
1 CONC After that, a friend taught him how to be a butcher and he could make 
1 CONC more money doing that, so he became a butcher and was known as one of the 
1 CONC best around, I was told.  I believe that Dad and Momma were married in 
1 CONC Missouri, then they moved to Oklahoma in a covered wagon.  Dad had a team 
1 CONC of plow horses/mules and when he and Momma arrived in Oklahoma, he worked 
1 CONC for an "oil-pumper".  They leased land and a house from the "pumper" and 
1 CONC he used his team of horses to "pull" oil wells.  Later, he worked as a 
1 CONC share cropper, helping other farmers in the area of Liberty Mounds and 
1 CONC Bixby.  I can remember one time, Dad's old team of horses/mules ("Maggie" 
1 CONC being the mare of the two) liked to run and he was sure that he had tied 
1 CONC them well.  They were probably untied by some of the black children in 
1 CONC the area as something for fun, well, they broke loose and ran (always 
1 CONC returning to the house at the gate).  This time, Willis, my brother was 
1 CONC about 4 years old, and he was in the back of the wagon, when they started 
1 CONC running.  The road home was bumpy and by the time they arrived at the 
1 CONC house, Willis had been bumped out of the wagon.  Momma came out of the 
1 CONC house and began screaming, just sure Willis had been killed, when someone 
1 CONC said "look, here he comes down the road."  Sure enough, Willis was 
1 CONC walking home and laughing, thinking that was a fun thing that happened.  
1 CONC Momma started laughing with him, when she realized he was not hurt.  When 
1 CONC Dad died, he was in a hospital in Oklahoma City and they called our home 
1 CONC in Tulsa and Elizabeth's, in New Boston, Texas, to notify us.  I was in 
1 CONC the hospital, in Tulsa, just having Sandra, my daughter.  Mace, my 
1 CONC husband, made arrangements with a funeral home in Tulsa to travel to 
1 CONC Oklahoma City and bring him back to Liberty Mounds, for burial.  Mace 
1 CONC notified Tom Simmons and he got several of the neighboring men of Liberty 
1 CONC Mounds, who knew Dad, to gather at the Duck Creek Cemetery to dig his 
1 CONC grave, by hand.  I do remember it was during the winter time.  Mace 
1 CONC picked out a brown suit for Dad to be buried in and made the arrangements.

1 CONC Tulsa).  Dad sold many of his things to care for momma during her illness 
1 CONC to help pay Dr. Davis.  Uncle Charley Kissee, in Missouri, told Dad, 
1 CONC after Momma's death, to come to Missouri and buy some land by paying for 
1 CONC back taxes.  Dad bought 50 acres there that had a house with large cedar 
1 CONC trees and gooseberries all around, where I played.  Her family came from 
1 CONC Missouri, as did Dad's, and originally, I understand the family came from 
1 CONC Holland. They were known as "Black-Dutch".

1 CONC According to tradition, Jacques LaCaze (Huguenot) was a progenitor of 
1 CONC Keesee family of VA, refugees from England and France about 1700 
1 CONC sponsored by William Byrd III (Henrico Co).  Olivia (Simmons) Keesee 
1 CONC (Mrs. Charles Blackwell Keesee), prominent in the Daughters of the 
1 CONC American Revolution, argues that a George Keesee, Huguenot, who came to 
1 CONC Henrico Co, VA, about 1700, was the founder of the family in America.  
1 CONC Whichever, it is widely held that all Keesees of Virginia were of the 
1 CONC same family, descending from a common ancestor.  Many of the descendants 
1 CONC of the first immigrant remained in Henrico County, others spread out 
1 CONC westward and southwestward and by the year 1800, and they were numerous, 
1 CONC particularly in the counties of Campbell, Charlotte, Halifax and 
1 CONC Pittsylvania.  At this period, families of the name lived in the 
1 CONC Carolinas.  Members of the family migrated and settled in Tennessee, 
1 CONC Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Kentucky, West Virginia, Colorado and 
1 CONC Missouri along with other states.  The records indicate that prior to the 
1 CONC Civil War, the Keesees of Eastern and Southern VA were generally planters 
1 CONC or farmers, owning large plantations on which tobacco was cultivated, 
1 CONC principally by their slaves.  Some of them, however, were professional 
1 CONC men and others held public office.  The records do no disclose that any 
1 CONC member of the family had service in the armed forces in the Revolutionary 
1 CONC War.  However, the records show that on Aug 10, 1781, the Commissioners 
1 CONC of Pittsylvania Co assessed one Jesse Keesee four pounds and one John 
1 CONC Kessee forty-two pounds for provisions for the Revolutionary Army.  
1 CONC Arthur Keesee and Richard Keesee's service in the Revolutionary War was 
1 CONC civil as distinguished from military.  However, the descendants of Jesse, 
1 CONC John, Arthur and Richard Keesee would be eligible to membership in the D. 
1 CONC A. R. and S. A. R. by reason of this support and service rendered to the 
1 CONC cause of American Independence.

1 CONC and immediately began practicing in Richmond.  He rapidly became one of 
1 CONC the most prominent and best loved dentists in the area.  He was 
1 CONC prominently identified with and instrumental in the organizing of both 
1 CONC the Virginia State Dental Association and the Richmond Dental Society.  
1 CONC He served as president of both organizations and served as secretary of 
1 CONC the State Association for more than 50 years.  Both Associations 
1 CONC presented him with large silver loving cups in recognition of his 50 
1 CONC years active leadership in his chosen profession.  Throughout his long 
1 CONC and useful adult life, he was very active in his profession, the 
1 CONC Methodist Church and Masonry until within a few months of his death.

1 CONC Arrived in Pittsylvania County, Virginia in 1765 when he received four 
1 CONC land grants totalling 1600 acres.  Arthur Keesee was tithable in 
1 CONC Pittsylvania City on the list of John Donelson in 1767.  He bought 12 1/2 
1 CONC acres "on the River" for 6 pounds,   11 shillings from Samuel Cox on 26 
1 CONC May 1769.  He followed his father and father-in-law to Halifax City, 
1 CONC where he bought 300 acres on Cow Creek for 75 pounds from George Adams of 
1 CONC Bedford City on 18 June 1777.  On 8 December 1777, he bought another 400 
1 CONC acres on both sides of Cow Creek from Thomas Gilbert and wife Hannah for 
1 CONC 60 pounds.  The entire tract of 700 acres was sold by him to Samuel 
1 CONC Tomkins on 22 February 1780 for 1,600 pounds, his wife Tabitha renouncing 
1 CONC dower and both spouses signing by mark.  As a resident of Halifax City, 
1 CONC he bought 200 acres on Flying Pan Creek for 14,200 pounds from Daniel 
1 CONC Fansher on 2 November 1781.  By 5 July 1783 he was again a resident of 
1 CONC Pittsylvania City buying 400 acres also on Flying Pan Creek for 250 
1 CONC pounds from Andrew Cocke.  On 12 May 1787 he mortgaged 943 acres of land, 
1 CONC slaves, cattle, horses and household furnishings to Samuel Calland.  This 
1 CONC mortgage was not satisfied at the time of his death.  In 1787 he was also 
1 CONC taxed by Pittsylvania City, VA.  Somehow Arthur managed to get into debt, 
1 CONC and in 1787 he was obliged by the court to turn his holdings over to 
1 CONC Samuel Calland for a sale to raise 200 pounds.  At that time an inventory 
1 CONC of his estate showed that he owned 943 acres, and four Negroes:  "Jack a 
1 CONC young fellow, Joe a young fellow, Moll, a middle-aged wence, and Lucy, a 
1 CONC middle-aged wence."  Also listed were 8 horses, including an "English 
1 CONC blooded filly, three years old", 17 cattle, 4 feather beds, 14 pewter 
1 CONC plates, 6 basons (sic) and 6 chairs.  Perhaps the "basons" were for 
1 CONC letting blood, a common cure-all in the 18th century.  Arthur was 
1 CONC apparently a ruined man, and his physical decline followed soon after his 
1 CONC financial one.  He was still in his forties when he died in 1789.  A 
1 CONC second inventory in 1791 (to settle the estate) showed only 200 acres of 
1 CONC land, "a Negroe boy named Jo, and two Negro wenches Lucy and Moll."  Some 
1 CONC items suggest that he still maintained a gracious standart of living, ie. 
1 CONC "8 Queens china plates, a Queens china pitcher, several Dutch blankets 
1 CONC and bolsters, seven knives and forks and one flesh fork."  Will of Arthur 
1 CONC Keezee, dated Jan 15, 1789, and probated in Pittsylvania City, VA on 18 
1 CONC May 1789, pp 178-180, Will and Deed Book:  Last Will and testament of 
1 CONC Arthur Keezee being weak, yet of sound and perfect memory and 
1 CONC understanding.  Lend to my dear and loving wife, Tabitha, this house and 
1 CONC furniture, the land and tenements and four negros; Lucy, Moll, Jack and 
1 CONC Joe, and stock during her life and widowhood, to raise and school my 5 
1 CONC children that are now with her; viz: Jesse Stoball Keezee, Jeremiah 
1 CONC Keezee, Phebe Keezee, Benjamin and George Keezee.  At the decease of my 
1 CONC wife, the aforementioned to be sold and then equally divided among these 
1 CONC 5 children.  To my daughter, Betty Burton, one shilling.  To my son, John 
1 CONC Keesee, one shilling.  I desire my plantation on Potters Creek 267 acres, 
1 CONC to be sold to discharge my debts.  Arthur Keezee.  Executors: Tabitha 
1 CONC Keezee and brothers, Jeremiah and Jesse Keesee.  A few months after 
1 CONC Arthur's death, "dear and loving wife" Tabitha remarried, relinquishing 
1 CONC her rights over the estate (she married Robert Martin on May 4, 1789 in 
1 CONC Pittsylvania Co.).  Two of her children were already married; John and 
1 CONC Betty.  Since John was under 21 years old, the court awarded William 
1 CONC Burton custody of the 5 minor Keesee children.  In 1791, John 
1 CONC successfully petitioned the court for guardianship of his younger 
1 CONC siblings.  All a Arthur Keezee's children seem to have migrated to 
1 CONC Pulaski Co., Kentucky with their relatives, the Jeremiah Keezees, the 
1 CONC Burtons and the Daltons.  The family emigrated from Kentucky to Indiana 
1 CONC and hence to Illinois, but later returned to Indiana, and settled in the

1 CONT Arthur Keesee's will, dated 15 January 1789, named as executor his wife 
1 CONC Tabitha and brothers Jeremiah and Jesse, directed the sale of land to pay 
1 CONC his debts, gave one shilling to his daughter Betty Burton and one 
1 CONC shilling also to his son John Keesee, and for the support of his younger 
1 CONC children (Jesse Stovall, Jeremiah, Phebe, Benjamin and George Keesee) he 
1 CONC devised other lands.  The widow (Tabitha) claimed her dower on 18 May 
1 CONC 1789 and she and her brothers-in-law declined to serve.  On 17 May 1790, 
1 CONC the (Pittsylvania) county court demanded that they show cause why they 
1 CONC did not take up the burden of administration and on 21 March 1791 the 
1 CONC sheriff was directed to seize and sell estate property.  On 16 May 1791, 
1 CONC Samuel Calland, as the greatest creditor was appointed administrator with 
1 CONC the will annexed.  On 18 May 1791, John Keesee, as heir at law of Arthur 
1 CONC Keesee, deceased, and his brother-in-law William Burton were appointed 
1 CONC guardians of Jesse, Jeremiah, Phebe, Benjamin and George Keesee, orphans 
1 CONC of Arthur Keesee.  Two actions were brought on 19 November 1794 in the 
1 CONC Pittsylvania County court, sitting in chancery:  John Keesee demanded 
1 CONC cash from Samuel Calland as administrator of his father's estate, and in 
1 CONC response Calland demanded payment of the mortgage on the Arthur Keesee 
1 CONC properties from the heirs, who were named as Robert Martin and his wife 
1 CONC Tabitha (Tabitha remarried on 4 May 1789 to Robert Martin), John Keesee 
1 CONC (eldest son), William Burton and his wife Betsy, and William also as the 
1 CONC guardian of the five younger Keesee children.  The court directed that 
1 CONC Calland must pay John Keesee 74 pounds and that the heirs must pay 
1 CONC Calland 200 pounds with interest from the date of the mortgage or suffer 
1 CONC foreclosure of their equity of redemption in the mortgaged property.

1 CONC the Willis Church in Henrico County, Virginia, succeeding his

1 CONC Keesee and Willis families and others.

1 CONC Charles was a businessman of many activities.  A banker, he was president 
1 CONC of the Peoples National Bank at Martinsville and was interested in and 
1 CONC owned considerable stock in the American Furniture Co., the Bassett 
1 CONC Furniture Co. and the North Carolina Granite Company.  In his will, 
1 CONC probated in the Henry County, Virginia Circuit Court in February 1940, he 
1 CONC disposed of an estate valued at $685,000 of which $30,000 was represented 
1 CONC by real estate and the remainder personal property.  He bequeathed to his 
1 CONC nephew, John Raleigh, 4,000 shares of common stock in the American 
1 CONC Furniture Company stock, the income from which was to go to two family 
1 CONC servants, Elvira Zeigler and Martha Kate Spencer, the principal 
1 CONC ultimately to go to the Salem, Virginia orphanage.  He provided for a 
1 CONC trust fund composed of 150 shares of Bassett Furniture Company preferred 
1 CONC stock, 200 shares of North Carolina Granite Company stock, 150 shares of 
1 CONC American Furniture Company preferred stock and 20,000 shares of common 
1 CONC stock of the American Furniture Company the income from which was given 
1 CONC in equal parts to four nieces, Mrs. A. K. Walker, Mrs. R. A. Stokes and 
1 CONC the Misses Janie and Ruth Raleigh for their lives and ultimately to 
1 CONC revert to the estate.  He bequeathed all the residue of the estate to his 
1 CONC widow, Olivia (Simmons) Keesee, one half in fee simple and the remaining 
1 CONC one-half to be administered by the trustees of the estate who were to pay 
1 CONC the income therefrom to Mrs. Keesee.  He made provisions for the 
1 CONC establishment of the Keesee Educational Fund for the benefit of the 
1 CONC youths of the Baptist Church.  Mr. Keesee was a consistent member of the 
1 CONC Baptist Church and was a generous contributor to it and its auxiliaries.

1 CONC 1917 (later also in the US Marine Corps).  Houston married Irma in 1929 
1 CONC in Anaheim and lived in Los Angeles, California.  They were divorced in 
1 CONC 1943 and Houston married Verna Beatrice Hanks in 1943 and they had a 
1 CONC daughter Suellen in 1945.  They farmed outside White Plains for several 
1 CONC years until Houston went into the ICBM construction work.  Houston died 
1 CONC in 1962 in the VA Hospital in Cheyenne, WY.

1 CONC Richard Keesee was the progenitor of a large family in Eastern Kentucky 
1 CONC and so far as the records disclose, was the first of the Keesees to cross 
1 CONC the Allegheny Mountains in the Westward Movement.  In the early 1800s, he 
1 CONC with his family and slaves, settled on or near the mouth of Pigeon Creek 
1 CONC on the Tug Fork of Big Sandy River in then Cabell County, Virginia.  It 
1 CONC is not known whether he came from the Holston or Clinch River settlements 
1 CONC in Southwestern Virginia where the Keesees had settled about a quarter of 
1 CONC a century before coming from Eastern or Southern Virginia where the 
1 CONC family had been for about a century.  It is definitely known, however, 
1 CONC that Richard Keesee was of the host of settlers who came in via the Great 
1 CONC Kanawha River and settled Cabell County in the early 1800s.  Richard 
1 CONC Keesee acquired by assignment considerable acreage in a tract of 11,065 
1 CONC acres of land situated on the Tug Fork and Pigeon Creek, then Cabell 
1 CONC Cunty, Virginia, which he had surveyed into small farms and conveyed in 
1 CONC 1812 to Richard Ferrell, John Safford, Vincent Grant, Elijah Donothan, 
1 CONC Ferrell Ivins and others.  It is not known when he removed from Cabell 
1 CONC County to Kentucky.  However, he was a resident of Floyd County, Kentucky 
1 CONC in 1810 and soon afterwards purchased and parented several tracts of land 
1 CONC in the county.  He finally settled on Hood's Fork of Big Blaine on the
